VWO and AB Tasty Alternatives for Higher Education Enrollment Teams

VWO and AB Tasty are now one company, Wingify. A shortlist of A/B testing tools for university and college enrollment marketing teams, judged on what admissions work actually needs: inquiry goals, low traffic, monthly billing and the CRM handoff.

VWO and AB Tasty Alternatives for Higher Education Enrollment Teams

The short answer: As of October 8, 2026, VWO and AB Tasty are one company, Wingify, so switching from one to the other does not change your vendor. For a university or college enrollment team testing paid program landing pages, the realistic shortlist is Humblytics ($79 a month, monthly billing, counts inquiry form submissions without code), Convert ($299 a month billed annually, the closest like-for-like VWO replacement), and the built-in testing in Unbounce or HubSpot if your pages already live there. GrowthBook and Statsig fit teams with engineers. Optimizely and Kameleoon fit large institutions with a dedicated experimentation team and an annual budget.

General "VWO alternatives" lists rank tools for ecommerce and SaaS, where the goal is a purchase and traffic is high. Enrollment marketing is different in four ways that change the shortlist:

  1. The conversion is an inquiry, not a sale. The test goal is a submitted request-for-information (RFI) or application form, and the CRM owns everything after it.
  2. Traffic is low per page. A single program page rarely gets the volume an online store does, so the tool's price and contract should fit occasional testing.
  3. Budgets are set a year ahead. A published price you can put in a budget request matters more than a feature list.
  4. Pages live in many places. The main site may run on the institution's CMS while paid campaign pages are built in a landing page tool or by an agency.

This guide judges each tool against those four points. For the testing method itself, sample sizes and goal setup, see how to A/B test enrollment landing pages.

What the Wingify merger means for a university on VWO or AB Tasty

Three dated changes, each from the vendor's own announcements:

  • January 20, 2026: VWO and AB Tasty announced a merger and said all existing client relationships, contracts, pricing, service levels and support would remain unchanged (Wingify).
  • June 13, 2026: the VWO app moved from app.vwo.com to app.wingify.com (Wingify).
  • September 16, 2026: the two launched a unified platform under the Wingify brand (PR Newswire).

Wingify describes VWO and AB Tasty as product brands within Wingify and says existing customers may keep using either product during the transition (wingify.com/llm-info). Its pricing page, where vwo.com/pricing and abtasty.com/pricing now redirect, shows no prices and says pricing is custom, based on traffic volume, products and implementation scope (wingify.com/pricing, checked October 1, 2026).

For an enrollment team, the practical effect shows up at renewal. If your contract is coming up, read what the merger means for your renewal and get the new terms in writing before you sign.

The alternatives, judged for enrollment marketing

1. Humblytics: for paid program pages and a monthly budget line

Price: Business $79 a month, Scale $279 a month with five team members, Enterprise custom. Monthly billing, 14-day trial. See pricing.

Humblytics is one cookie-free script with a no-code visual editor, split URL tests for whole new page versions, heatmaps, funnels and analytics. For enrollment work, the parts that matter:

  • Inquiry forms are tracked as the goal without custom code, so a test is scored on submitted RFIs rather than clicks on the "Request info" button.
  • Monthly billing and no traffic minimums fit a team that tests during application season and pauses in summer.
  • Install it on campaign landing pages only. It does not need to run across the whole institutional site.
  • An onboarding call is included to set up the first test.

The limits, stated plainly: there is no session replay, no server-side testing and no white-labelled reporting. It measures the landing page and the inquiry, not what happens in Slate, Element451 or your CRM after it. It is a newer, smaller vendor than the enterprise names below. If your procurement process requires peer institutions as references, ask about that before you start a trial. See Humblytics for higher education.

2. Convert: the closest like-for-like VWO replacement

Price: Growth $399 a month billed monthly, or $299 a month billed annually, including 100,000 tested users a month. Overage is $399 per additional 100,000. Verified at convert.com/pricing, August 2026.

Convert covers what most VWO customers use: a visual editor, client-side and server-side testing, and a published rate card. It is the safest pick if your team relies on VWO features beyond landing page tests and wants to keep them. Model the overage before you sign. A busy enrollment cycle that pushes tested users past the plan adds cost.

3. Unbounce or HubSpot: if your campaign pages already live there

If an agency or your team builds paid campaign pages in Unbounce, A/B testing is included on the Experiment plan and above (Unbounce pricing, checked October 1, 2026). If the pages and forms are in HubSpot, page A/B tests need Content Hub Professional or Enterprise (HubSpot Knowledge Base, checked October 1, 2026).

Check your current plan first. The cheapest alternative to VWO may be a feature you already pay for. The limit is scope: built-in testing works only on pages built in that tool.

4. Zoho PageSense: the lowest published price

Price: Enterprise $29.42 a month billed annually, the first tier that includes A/B testing, with 10,000 monthly tracked users. The free and Professional plans do not include A/B testing. Verified at zoho.com/pagesense/pricing, August 2026.

A reasonable choice for a single program with modest traffic. The tracked-user cap means it does not grow far with you.

5. GrowthBook or Statsig: if engineers run the tests

Both have generous free tiers: GrowthBook's Starter plan with unlimited experiments and traffic for three users, and Statsig's Developer plan with 2M events a month (growthbook.io/pricing, statsig.com/pricing, August 2026). They are built for product and engineering teams. An admissions marketer changing a headline will find them harder going than a visual editor. They make sense when your web team owns testing and has a data warehouse.

6. Optimizely or Kameleoon: for a dedicated experimentation program

Large institutions running many tests across the whole site, with a security review and an annual contract, may stay in the enterprise tier. Optimizely does not publish prices (optimizely.com/plans, checked October 1, 2026). Kameleoon publishes a starting price of $495 a month (kameleoon.com/plans, August 2026). If you are leaving VWO because of price or contract terms, check that these do not bring the same terms back.

How to choose

Start with two questions. The answers narrow the list before features do.

Who builds the landing pages?

  • An agency or your team in Unbounce or HubSpot: start with the built-in testing.
  • Your team on the institution's CMS, or a mix of tools: you need a script-based tool such as Humblytics, Convert or Zoho PageSense.
  • Your web developers: GrowthBook or Statsig.

How often will you actually test?

  • A few tests a year, mostly in application season: a monthly-billed tool you can pause.
  • A test running at all times across many programs: an annual plan can be worth it.

Then apply three checks to whichever tool you shortlist:

  1. Can it count the inquiry on the tested page? If your program pages share one thank-you page, a thank-you page goal cannot tell you which page produced the lead. The form submission on the tested page can.
  2. Does your traffic support the test? You need about 400 submitted inquiries per version to detect a 20% lift. Use a sample size calculator before you buy, not after.
  3. What does it meter, and what happens in a busy month? Tested users, tracked users and events each behave differently when a campaign spikes in January.

Moving off VWO without losing a cycle

No tool imports another tool's experiment history. A practical switch for an enrollment team:

  1. Export your VWO results as a static record, with each test's dates, goal and outcome.
  2. Pick the next test now, on one high-spend program page, so the new tool starts with a real question.
  3. Run both scripts for two to four weeks on that page only, and compare inquiry counts against your CRM for the same period.
  4. Cancel before the renewal date, not after. Ask Wingify for the notice period in writing.

The full checklist, including the questions to ask before renewal, is in the Wingify renewal guide.
