Best A/B Testing Tools for Shopify in 2026 (Ranked by What You Can Actually Test)

The best Shopify A/B testing tools for 2026, ranked against the constraints that matter: locked checkout, theme architecture, and revenue per session. Real prices verified at each vendor in August 2026.

Best A/B Testing Tools for Shopify in 2026 (Ranked by What You Can Actually Test)

The short answer: The best A/B testing tools for Shopify in 2026 are Shoplift ($99/mo) for theme and template tests without flicker, ABConvert ($99/mo) for the widest test surface on a Built for Shopify app, and Shogun AB Testing ($39/mo) as the cheapest serious starting point. Intelligems ($1,279/mo discounted) is the standard for price and margin testing at volume. Shopify's checkout is closed to script injection, so no tool tests the Information, Shipping or Payment steps unless you are on Shopify Plus using checkout extensibility. Score every test on revenue per session, not conversion rate. All prices verified August 2026.

Most A/B testing roundups treat Shopify as just another website. It is not. Three platform-level constraints decide which tools can do the job, and two of them will silently invalidate your results if you ignore them.

This guide ranks the tools against those constraints rather than against a feature checklist. For a platform-agnostic ranking, see our 12 best A/B testing tools for marketers.

At a glance: Shopify A/B testing tools compared

ABConvert Widest test surface for the money $99/mo (1,000 orders) Price, shipping, theme, content, checkout Yes, Built for Shopify
Shogun AB Testing Cheapest serious entry $39/mo (3 active tests) Pages, themes, templates, split URL Yes, Built for Shopify
Intelligems Price and margin testing at volume $1,279/mo discounted Price, shipping, content, checkout, post-purchase Yes
Visually Testing plus personalization and upsells $890/mo (7.5k to 10k orders) Content, themes, checkout, upsells Yes
Theme Scientist Smallest stores $9.99/mo (50 orders) Themes, product pages Yes
Humblytics The ad landing pages feeding the store $79/mo Landing pages, funnels, heatmaps, revenue attribution No, script-based
Convert Experiences Multi-property brands with privacy rules $399/mo (100k tested users) Any page, split URL, multivariate No
VWO Enterprise CRO programs Quote only Any page, server-side No
Optimizely Enterprise experimentation programs Quote only Any page, server-side, feature flags No

Quick verdict

  • Best overall for a Shopify store: Shoplift, because theme-level splitting avoids the flicker that corrupts client-side tests.
  • Best value: ABConvert at $99/mo, which covers price, shipping, theme, content and checkout in one app.
  • Cheapest serious option: Shogun AB Testing at $39/mo for three concurrent tests.
  • Best for price and margin testing: Intelligems, if your order volume justifies four figures a month.
  • Best under $20/mo: Theme Scientist at $9.99/mo, with the caveat that its review base is small.
  • Best for the landing pages that feed the store: Humblytics at $79/mo.

Why Shopify A/B testing is different

1. The checkout is closed

This is the constraint that catches people out, and it is not a matter of opinion. Shopify's own developer documentation states that checkout.liquid "is now unsupported for the Information, Shipping, and Payment checkout steps" and that checkout.liquid and additional scripts "were sunset for the Thank you and Order status pages on August 28, 2025."

In practice: you cannot drop a JavaScript tag into Shopify checkout. Any tool that works by injecting a script into your storefront stops at the cart. Testing inside checkout requires Shopify Plus and checkout extensibility, delivered through app blocks and Shopify Functions rather than a tag. Shogun's Unlimited tier at $499/mo explicitly lists "Test Checkout Blocks (Shopify Plus)" for exactly this reason.

If a tool promises checkout testing and you are not on Plus, ask precisely what it means.

2. Themes are the natural unit of variation, not elements

Client-side tools work by loading the page, then rewriting it. On a Shopify theme with a heavy above-the-fold section, that rewrite is visible: the shopper sees version A for a beat, then version B. That flash is flicker, and it does two things. It hurts the variant's numbers, and it hurts them unevenly, which biases the result rather than just adding noise.

Shopify's theme architecture offers a cleaner path. Duplicate the theme, change the duplicate, split traffic at the theme level, and the shopper is served one finished page. Shoplift is built around this, and Shogun and ABConvert both offer theme and template testing. This is the single biggest reason a Shopify-native app usually beats a general-purpose testing tool on the same store.

3. Conversion rate is the wrong scoreboard

Ecommerce has a metric that most SaaS funnels do not: average order value. A variant can lift conversion rate and lose you money.

Work it through. Baseline: 100,000 sessions, 2.4% conversion, $68 AOV. That is 2,400 orders and $163,200, or $1.63 revenue per session. Now a variant lifts conversion to 2.6% but pulls AOV down to $58 because the winning treatment was a discount banner. That is 2,600 orders and $150,800, or $1.51 revenue per session. Conversion rate says you won by 8.3%. The bank says you lost $12,400.

Score Shopify tests on revenue per session, and on gross margin per session if you are testing price or shipping. Any tool that only reports conversion rate is reporting the wrong number.

The tools, ranked

1. Shoplift

Best for: stores that want theme and template tests with no flicker.

Shoplift splits traffic at the theme level rather than repainting the page, which removes the flicker problem at the root instead of masking it with an anti-flicker snippet. It handles theme testing, template testing and split URL testing, with Bayesian analysis on top.

Pricing (verified August 2026, shoplift.ai/pricing): Core Optimization Essentials $99/mo for up to 50,000 monthly store visitors. Advanced $399/mo up to 100,000 visitors, adding audience and region segmentation, GA4 integration and a JS API for custom tests. Pro $699/mo up to 250,000 visitors with a dedicated account manager. 14-day free trial.

Limitations: priced on visitors rather than orders, so a high-traffic store with a low conversion rate pays more than an efficient one. Element-level editing is less flexible than a full visual editor.

2. ABConvert

Best for: the widest test surface per dollar.

ABConvert carries Shopify's Built for Shopify badge and tests price, shipping, theme, content and checkout from one app. It rates 4.7 stars across 71 reviews on the Shopify App Store. Price and shipping testing at this tier is unusual; most tools in the same price band only test layout and copy.

Pricing (verified August 2026, apps.shopify.com/a-b-convert-price-a-b-test): Starter $99/mo up to 1,000 orders. Growth $199/mo up to 5,000 orders. Scale $399/mo up to 15,000 orders. Pro $599/mo up to 30,000 orders. 14-day free trial.

Limitations: order-based pricing climbs quickly for a high-volume store. A store doing 20,000 orders a month pays $599, where a visitor-priced tool might cost less.

3. Shogun AB Testing

Best for: the cheapest entry point that is still a real testing tool.

Shogun tests pages, themes, templates and split URLs, and is Built for Shopify. Its Advanced tier is worth naming specifically: at $119/mo it lists MCP access with Claude and ChatGPT plus Meta and Google Ads integration, which means an agent can operate the tool directly rather than through a wrapper you maintain.

Pricing (verified August 2026, apps.shopify.com/shogun-ab-testing): Pro $39/mo with 3 active tests. Advanced $119/mo with 5 active tests, advanced analytics and goals, MCP access and ad integrations. Unlimited $499/mo adding multivariate testing, price testing and Checkout Blocks testing for Shopify Plus. 4.3 stars across 42 reviews. Free trial available.

Limitations: price testing sits on the $499 tier, so the cheap plans are layout and copy only. Three concurrent tests is tight once you have a roadmap.

4. Intelligems

Best for: brands testing price, margin and shipping thresholds at real volume.

Intelligems is the reference tool for price experiments on Shopify, with 4.8 stars across 163 Shopify App Store reviews and customers including Ridge, Jones Road and True Classic. It covers content, merchandising, price, shipping, checkout and post-purchase as separate modules, and it reports on profit rather than only conversion. It also documents an MCP server for Claude.

Pricing (verified August 2026, intelligems.io/pricing): no flat entry price. The Unlimited bundle priced out at $2,894/mo list, discounted to $1,279/mo, on a 3-month minimum, at the slider's 10,000 orders per month position. Modules can be bought individually with bundle discounts of 5% for two, 10% for three, 15% for four or more. 14-day free trial, which excludes Smart Pricing. The Limited price tier allows one price test per month; Unlimited allows concurrent tests plus multi-currency.

Limitations: this is a four-figure monthly commitment with a minimum term. Below roughly 5,000 orders a month the arithmetic rarely works, and the free trial deliberately withholds the module most people are evaluating.

5. Visually

Best for: stores that want testing, personalization and upsells from one app.

Visually bundles a visual editor, content and theme testing, redirect testing, audience targeting, product recommendations and post-purchase offers. Merchants report it replacing three or four separate apps, which is the honest case for it: the testing is competent, the consolidation is the value.

Pricing (verified August 2026, visually.io/pricing): order-volume based. At one store doing 7,500 to 10,000 net new DTC orders per month, Launch is $890/mo, Pro $1,200/mo and Scale $2,800/mo. Annual billing saves 10%. Price and shipping testing sits on Pro and above, and requires Shopify Plus. 14-day free trial, no credit card.

Limitations: the entry price assumes meaningful order volume, and the higher tiers are partly buying CRO consulting hours rather than software.

6. Theme Scientist

Best for: small stores that want to start testing this week for the price of a coffee round.

Theme Scientist does no-code theme and product A/B testing plus theme scheduling. It is the cheapest genuine Shopify testing app we could verify.

Pricing (verified August 2026, apps.shopify.com/theme-scientist): Tester $9.99/mo up to 50 orders per month. Tester+ $19.99/mo up to 250 orders. Tester Pro $29.99/mo up to 500 orders. 14-day free trial.

Limitations: 3.5 stars across only 10 reviews, so there is far less evidence here than for the tools above. Also worth stating plainly: a store doing 50 orders a month does not have the traffic to resolve a normal A/B test. See the sample size point below before you spend the $9.99.

7. Humblytics

Best for: the paid-ads landing pages, quiz funnels and content pages that feed the store.

Humblytics is not a Shopify theme testing app and we are not going to pretend it is. It is a script-based platform that puts analytics, no-code A/B testing, funnels, heatmaps and revenue attribution behind one tag, with a hosted MCP server so an agent in Claude or Codex can read the data and run the loop.

On a Shopify store the honest fit is the surfaces around the store rather than the theme itself: the Meta ad landing page, the pre-sell page, the offer page, the custom-domain funnel. Those pages are usually where the money leaks and they are usually outside whatever Shopify app you installed.

One constraint you should hear from us rather than discover later. Humblytics resolves a test verdict against a connected Stripe account. If your store takes payment through Shopify Payments, there is no Stripe account of your own for that connection to read, so revenue attribution covers the surfaces you run on your own Stripe checkout, not Shopify Payments orders. If you run subscriptions or a headless checkout on Stripe, that changes.

Pricing (verified August 2026, humblytics.com/pricing): Business $79/mo with 500K events, unlimited websites, 5 concurrent A/B tests, 5 funnels, 5 heatmaps, Meta ad attribution and the hosted MCP plus REST API. Scale $279/mo with 1M events and unlimited tests, funnels and heatmaps. Enterprise custom. 14-day free trial.

Limitations: no theme-level splitting, no price or shipping testing, and the Shopify Payments constraint above.

8. Convert Experiences

Best for: brands running Shopify alongside other web properties under strict privacy requirements.

Convert is a platform-agnostic experimentation tool with a long-standing privacy reputation, both Bayesian and frequentist engines, and over 100 integrations. It also documents an official MCP server with configurable read-only and read/write access.

Pricing (verified August 2026, convert.com/pricing): Growth $399/mo and Pro $599/mo, both at 100,000 tested users per month. Enterprise on request at 12M tested users per year. 15-day free trial. Note that Convert publishes public prices again; roundups still describing it as quote-only are out of date.

Limitations: it is not Shopify-aware. No theme testing, no price testing, no order-level reporting without work.

9. VWO and 10. Optimizely

Best for: enterprise programs where Shopify is one channel among several.

Both are mature, both do server-side and client-side testing, and neither publishes a price. VWO's pricing page routes every plan to sales with no dollar figure shown. Optimizely's states that "Every Optimizely plan is individually packaged. Tell us a bit about your digital needs, and we'll create a plan together." Both verified August 2026. For a single Shopify store, quote-only pricing works as a qualification filter rather than a negotiation.

Choose Shoplift, ABConvert or Shogun if you...

  • run a standard Shopify theme and your tests are layout, copy, imagery and product page structure
  • have been burned by flicker, or have a heavy hero section
  • want reporting that already understands orders and AOV
  • are spending under $1,000 a month on CRO tooling

Choose Intelligems or Visually if you...

  • do more than 5,000 orders a month
  • want to test price, shipping thresholds or bundle structure, not just layout
  • need margin reporting rather than revenue reporting
  • have someone whose job includes running the testing roadmap

Choose Humblytics or Convert if you...

  • are testing the pages that feed the store rather than the store itself
  • run Shopify alongside a Webflow or Framer site, a funnel, or a separate offer page
  • need heatmaps, funnels and testing under one script rather than three subscriptions
  • want an agent in Claude or Codex to read the data and drive the loop

Do you have enough traffic to test at all?

Before you buy anything, run the arithmetic. Detecting a 10% relative lift on a 2.4% baseline conversion rate at 95% confidence and 80% power takes roughly 68,000 sessions per variant, so about 136,000 sessions for a clean two-arm test. If your store does 20,000 sessions a month, that is a seven-month test, which is longer than your seasonality cycle and longer than the theme will survive unchanged.

Two honest options at low traffic. Test things with large expected effects, which usually means price, offer structure and shipping thresholds rather than button colour. Or test upstream where the volume is, on the ad creative and the landing page, before the traffic thins out across your catalogue. Use a sample size calculator and a test duration calculator first, not after the test disappoints you.

Conclusion

For most Shopify stores in 2026 the decision is simple. Under $1,000 a month, pick a Shopify-native app: Shoplift if your tests are theme and template shaped, ABConvert if you want price and shipping in the same tool, Shogun if $39 is the budget. Above 5,000 orders a month with a real testing roadmap, Intelligems or Visually earn their four-figure price through price and margin testing that the cheaper tools do not offer.

Whatever you pick, hold two rules. Do not promise yourself checkout tests you cannot run without Shopify Plus, and do not declare a winner on conversion rate when revenue per session is sitting right there.

If the pages feeding your store need the same treatment, start a 14-day free trial of Humblytics or book a demo.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify have built-in A/B testing?

No. Shopify does not ship a native storefront A/B testing feature, which is why the app ecosystem for it is so large. You need an app such as Shoplift, ABConvert, Shogun or Intelligems, or a platform-agnostic tool loaded via script.

Can you A/B test the Shopify checkout?

Only on Shopify Plus, and only through checkout extensibility. Shopify's developer documentation confirms checkout.liquid is unsupported for the Information, Shipping and Payment steps, and that checkout.liquid and additional scripts were sunset for the Thank you and Order status pages on August 28, 2025. Script-injection tools cannot reach checkout at all. Shogun's Unlimited tier and Intelligems both offer checkout testing via the supported Plus path.

What is the cheapest Shopify A/B testing app?

Theme Scientist at $9.99/mo for up to 50 orders per month is the cheapest we verified in August 2026, though it carries only 10 reviews. Shogun AB Testing at $39/mo is the cheapest option with a substantial review base and the Built for Shopify badge.

Why do my Shopify A/B tests flicker?

Because a client-side tool loads your original page, then rewrites it in the browser. On a theme with a heavy hero section that rewrite is visible. Theme-level splitting, which Shoplift is built around and Shogun and ABConvert also support, serves one finished page instead and removes the cause rather than covering it.

Should I measure conversion rate or revenue per session?

Revenue per session, and gross margin per session if the test touches price or shipping. A variant that lifts conversion 8% while dropping average order value 15% is a loss that a conversion-rate readout will report as a win.

How much traffic does a Shopify store need to A/B test?

Roughly 68,000 sessions per variant to detect a 10% relative lift on a 2.4% baseline conversion rate at 95% confidence and 80% power, so about 136,000 sessions for a two-arm test. Below about 30,000 monthly sessions, prioritise tests with large expected effects such as price, offer and shipping threshold, or move the testing upstream to your ads and landing pages where the volume still exists.

Which Shopify A/B testing tools work with an agent?

As of August 2026, Shogun lists MCP access with Claude and ChatGPT on its Advanced tier at $119/mo, Intelligems documents an MCP server for Claude, Convert documents an official MCP server with configurable access levels, and Humblytics ships a hosted MCP server covering traffic, funnels and split tests. MCP support is no longer rare, so evaluate what the agent can actually resolve a verdict to, not whether a server exists.
